Have you ever dropped the tailgate of a pickup truck and sat on it? Feet dangling, swinging back and forth. Maybe some food or a drink in your hand, maybe some music playing nearby. Maybe it’s warm, maybe bundled under blankets. Maybe you’re watching children play soccer or swim in the ocean. Maybe you’re watching fireworks or playing a guitar. Maybe you have a friend with you, or a dog.
Have you ever hiked to the top of a mountain and seen the view? Have you ever done both at once… dropped the tailgate on a truck on top of a mountain? That one is special, with the majesty of Mother Earth out there. By the way, there are MANY public roads on US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management property that take you to such places.
I love dropping the tailgate and pondering what I see, observing people, scenery. I’ve had the fortune of travelling through many airports. Peoplewatching there is fascinating, especially Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport. Oh, the variety of people out there in the world! Six billion varieties or so in fact.
Hanging on a tailgate is very casual and authentic to me. It’s safe. It’s playful. A tailgate gives you a small lift in your perspective too. I prefer to have my feet on the ground – metaphorically as well as practically – so being elevated a little is a neat feeling while the truck can be more solid than some loose earth. Try standing on the tailgate. The view changes again when you’re only three or four feet above everyone else’s heads. I can get a little dizzy after standing too long. It’s nice to have someone to hold on to at that time.
